What is a Short Scar Neck Lift?

When most people think of plastic surgery, they often associate it with long recovery times and invasive procedures. Although this can be said about some procedures, there are other procedures that can be accomplished with only a few minor incisions. One of these procedures is a short scar neck lift. Let’s discuss what this procedure entails and what criteria we look for in an ideal patient. A short scar neck lift is a procedure that improves neck aesthetics. It is performed through a submental incision only (incision under the chin). This surgery is best suited for patients who have isolated poor neck contour and are bothered specifically by fullness under the chin.

The Procedure

The procedure is performed through a small incision under the chin but without any removal of skin. It improves neck contour by modifying deep neck layer structures. Once the deep layer is modified, the skin is allowed to redistribute itself over the increased neck surface area created. Improvement in neck contour is achieved by reducing and modifying structures deep in the neck not by tightening the skin or removing subcutaneous fat (fat that is immediately under the skin). In fact, preserving superficial fat will help create a smoother outcome.

Who is an Ideal Candidate?

Not everyone is a candidate for this procedure. A short scar neck lift is typically best for young patients with mild to moderate skin excess, good skin elasticity, and minimal or modest aging in the midface, cheek, and jowl. Just like all the other procedures that I perform, patients should have reasonable expectations for improvement and be in good health.
